The Swan

The Online Quiz is taking a rest for now as the pub is re-opened on April, 12th. To all those who participated and donated, a huge thank you from all at The Swan - you helped us keep paying the bills and kept work in The Kitchen going! We now have regular quizzes in pub on a Wednesday, please see our Future Events page.

Usual quiz format with multiple rounds of questions set by our Quiz Master who can be one of the regular quizzers. Rounds are fairly typical but expect a 'googly' round every so often. Self-marking is required. For our Online Quiz there is NO pre-registration required, simply click on this button to join at 8.00pm on the night.

Please note that you will need to be admitted from the waiting room into the actual video call by our host (who also has the ability to mute or even eject people). Also note that we have an online etiquette policy to enable people to enjoy our online entertainment safely.

We do suggest joining a few minutes before to make sure the technology all works. Note that we are limited to 100 Zoom connections on the night (this is a technology thing). When you are getting ready, please can you make sure that change the screen name to match the one you have told us about (e.g. first name, nickname, team name, etc). This will help us manage the quiz better. You may also want to change your background.

It's up to you whether you mute or not during the quiz but please be aware we will be able to hear everything you say if you are unmuted - that means everything.

The Quiz

The quiz will be in the normal format of five or six rounds including probably geography, sport, film & TV and general knowledge. In the case of a tie, we will have a "nearest to" question. There will be a short break of approximately five minutes in the middle so you can top up your glasses.

Each night we will have three winners:

  • Best Team
  • Best Household / Table
  • Best Individual

This is to reflect the online nature of the quiz where not everyone can get together.

Does it cost me to play?

No! However we are asking for donations to a cause that will be announced before the event. We don't expect you to donate lots, just the cost of a card or a drink that you would have bought if The Swan was open.

In the meantime, as you know we have zero cash coming in at this time but we still have significant outgoings. Triodos have graciously given us a mortgage holiday but we still have the interest to pay. Likewise, we have payments for water, electricity, RBWM, et al that don't go away.

If you can, we would be extremely obliged if you could make a small donation securely via PayPal. This will be used to protect the pub so that we have a greater chance of coming out of this whenever the Government decides that pubs can re-open. Any donation small or large is appreciated.

Zoom FAQs

We will be using Zoom to host the game, which means that we can have two way interaction with video and sound! If you have broadband or WiFi, it is best to use this as a mobile connection may not be fast enough and/or may use quite a lot of your personal mobile data.

Whatever device you are using, please make sure you have a lot of battery or the charger is plugged in – we don't want to lose you during the Quiz.

If you don't already have Zoom, it may ask you to install a small add on for your PC, tablet or phone. It is not strictly necessary to do this, as you can use a web-based version, but we would definitely recommend it! Don’t worry it is very easy and completely safe!

There is an echo. Echo can be caused by many things, such as players connected to the meeting audio on multiple devices or two players who have joined in from the same local. The source of echo can also be from: speakers (such as TV or soundbar) that are too loud, echo cancellation has failed (device or performance issue), or a bad microphone.
