    OUR SWAN SONG TO 2020

    We had an evening of Bingo with a Twist, a Quiz and a guided Beer Tasting. There was some singing, some danciing and a lot of good fun.

    Unusual times required an unusual quiz. This time it took place in The Pub and also online. We aknowledged that some of the community could not come out due to the Tier restrictions.

    We opened again with new restrictions, a food offering and a bar that had been spruced up. It was an interesting night for all. Some photos are in our Events Diary for that day.

    So the Quiz moved back online during lockdown. Despite a technical hiccup that caused a few to miss it (sincere apologies), we had a good turn out. We received some donations to the pub funds. Thank you.

    HUG IN A MUG

    We are holding a virtual coffee morning every Friday via Zoom. Starts at ten and people are welcome to join when they want until 11. We have recorded one of the events to show you can have fun on Friday the 13th during lockdown.

    We spoke too soon and we were soon in lockdown again. As soon as that happened, we decided to move online again. And again the Bingo players came out and also donated well to the pub funds. Thank you.

  • British Legion Coffee Morning

    BRITISH LEGION COFFEE AM

    We raised over £600 for The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal at our coffee monring. Many thanks to all those who came along and those who donated cakes. Also thanks to Louise Birch for making the crocheted poppies which are going down a storm. Organised by Rachel Cross.

  • Defib Dedication

    DEFIB DEDICATION

    At long last we managed to get together as a community and dedicate the new defibrillator to the man who came up with idea - Adrian Chojnacki. A group of friends and Weekday Warriors and Sewing Bees got together for the special event. Adrian's family were there and Dawn unveiled the plaque. Richard Allen spoke kindly of Adrian's contribution.

    OKTOBERFEST

    Oktoberfest may have been cancelled in Munich but The Swan gave it a real go. Special beers, special food and special music all with the theme of Bavaria, in deepest Germany. The locals turned out in such force that we had to do an emergency beer run!

  • BBC Radio Berkshire

    BBC RADIO BERKSHIRE

    It's one year since we welcomed Phil Kennedy and his team from BBC Radio Berkshire to The Swan. They wanted to come back to see how we are getting on but unfortunately - due to covid restrictions - that wasn't possible. So instead, they ran a series of telephone interviews with some of the team and supporters.

  • Cheese Tasting

    CHEESE & WINE

    The Cheesemunger came to The Swan again and the place was packed (in the new norm way). The Pub and The Coach House had been fully booked, some people were using The Courtyard and The School Room. Again an excellent night of cheese complemented with £3 off a bottle of wine.

    We had an excellent evening and the Cheesemunger has agreed to do this on a monthly basis for the rest of 2020 - result!

  • Macmillan Coffee Morning

    MACMILLAN COFFEE

    We are so happy how the community supported the Macmillan Coffee Morning initiative this year. Whether it was baking or actually drinking & eating, it was fantastic to support such a worthy cause. We are still adding up the numbers, but we raised £600 on the day.

  • GREAT BRITISH PUB AWARDS

    GREAT BRITISH PUB AWARDS

    We were in the final and up for the Keeping The Community Entertained award. It is a new award to recognise action by pubs during the lockdown. We are down to the last six.

    During the televised ceremony, it was announced that The Swan won!!! Fantastic news for the pub, the school and the community.

  • Market Garden in The Courtyard on September 6th

    MINI-MARKET

    The Green Room School will be back in The Courtyard selling fresh produce from their allotment just around the corner.

    There was other stalls too including the Cheesemunger offering a range of produce and products. Brunch was offered too. Photos coming soon.

  • Filming for the Great British Pub Awards

    GREAT BRITISH PUB AWARDS

    As finalist of the Great British Pub Awards, the organisers sent a camera crew to film the pub and school and some of the people involved. It took place on a beautiful sunny monring just after The Coach House had been completed.

  • The Coach House

    THE COACH HOUSE IS REBORN

    After an intensive 12 weeks or so, the contractors have finished with The Coach House. We now have a totally refurbished and safe building, with a new fully equipped IT Suite in the top floor. The ground floor will be finished by the Weekday Warriors.

    We have produced a summary and (a wee thanks to those involved) of the Rebirth of The Coach House.

    It was the first time we had arrange in Bingo in The Pub. And we had a small online contingent too. Richard was our Caller. After an initial hiccough, it was Eyes Down and fund for all.

    BARBECUE

    On Saturday we held one of our now famous BBQ between 5 and 8pm. There was a good turn out again with most of the seats insode and outside taken. We made some good money towards the restoration funds.

  • Events on August Bank Holiday

    BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND

    On Saturday we held a BBQ between 5 and 8pm. Despite it being a bit cold, we had a good turnout.

    On Sunday The Courtyard was busy with a mini-market, brunch from the BBQ and also the launch of our cyclist pitstop (including a two-wheel scavanger hunt).

  • 75th ANNIVERSARY OF VJ DAY

    75th ANNIVERSARY OF VJ DAY

    VJ75 was an excellent celebration down at The Swan. The BBQ ran from midday until 9pm without stopping. We had singers in to which went down a storm.

    BARBECUE

    The first BBQ of 2020 due to the lockdown. This was in the new norm with table service, social distancing and a lot less people than normal. However that didn't stop the fun.

  • First Anniversary

    FIRST ANNIVERSARY

    A slightly quieter affair than we would have liked to plan but it was great to be joined by friends old and new as we raised a glass (or two) to toast the first anniversary of trading. Helped by the good weather we have welcomed the opportunity to be back at the heart of the community and hope to see you soon.

    The Annual General Meeting took place in The COurtyard in front of a selection of The Bevy. It was stream on Facebook Live so others could see too.

    RE-OPENING AFTER COVID

    The pub re-opened it's doors for the first time in over three months of lockdown. Trade was brisk. Everybody was fine. And it went well. Fingers crossed for this to continue!

    Potentially our last truly online Bingo event, we had our regulars and Louise, a lady all the way from Falmouth who had found us on the Internet. We raised £65 towards the upkeep of The Swan during shutdown. We are looking into ways of continuing the Bingo in the future.

    The Book Club continues to meet every fortnight online via Zoom. Patricia, Marilyn, Catherine, Austin, Emily, Rachel, Ellie, Anne, Ruth & Theresa enjoyed the evening and are looking forward to the next. Why not join them?

    We are reading a book together recommended by one of our new members, Patricia. They have given themselves 6 weeks to read “Once Upon A River” by Diane Setterfield, set in a pub on the Thames called The Swan.

It was great fun and will be repeated in a fortnight. We also raised £167 for The Swan to cover running costs during the lockdown.

    LIVE MUSIC

    Mark & Sherridan were live last night singing an excellent mixture of well-known tracks. It was an excellent evening which we hope they will do again.

    They raised £65 through donations made by those viewing the gig. A huge thanks to them. It was a bit unclear how to do make a donation and that it was towards the running costs of The Swan during the lockdown.

    The second Bingo Night was well attended. We listened and let housholds have multiple cards so families could play together. Over 60 cards were sent out to nearly 40 households. We raised £305 for The Swan's funds.

    THE SWAN QUIZ NIGHT

    We held our first quiz night but due to the lockdown it was online with both audio and video over the Internet. Approximately 40 households joined with over 50 players. We had five rounds with covering general knowledge through to sport to diloids. Yes, ditloids (you need to look it up, honest). It was great fun and will be repeated in a fortnight. We also raised £112 for Family Friends.

    We held our first bingo night but due to the lockdown it was online with both audio and video over the Internet. Approximately 40 households joined with over 50 players. We had three games with each person having a unique bingo card. It was great fun and will be repeated in a fortnight.

    We also raised £320 for our chosen local chartiy, Family Friends.

  • Covid-19 Shutdown

    COVID-19 SHUTDOWN

    On this day, the UK Government decided to act decisively and shutdown meeting places such as pubs. This was an unprecedented action that was required to protect the NHS and keep people safe. The Swan closed its's doors in support.

  • Cheese Tasting

    CHEESE TASTING

    The Cheese Munger came to The Swan and provided an excellent selection of soft and hard cheeses mainly from the UK. It was real hit especially when married up with some of the nice wines we had on offer for the night.

    We had an excellent evening and will definitely be doing this again!.

    We welcomed The Jam Factory Band for their first appearance at The Swan. They are a six-piece with an extensive repertoire of classic rock, blues and soul music from the 1960's to the present day – that's 6 decades to fit into 2 hours!

    BREW MONDAY

    Sharing a cuppa (or a pint) with some companionship and chat is really important. The Samaritans took Blue Monday - the most depressing day of the year - and turned it into a reason for getting together and not being alone. If you came down specially or simply spoke to someone new - thank you!
