May 2024

Here is a round-up of the events at The Swan during May, 2024.

3rd May: Mirella

Friend of The Swan Chatty Café host- Mirella Paul - was doing a sponsored walk to raise funds for the restoration of the pub. It was a horrible say but Mirella and 12 others completed a 5km circular walk that started and finished at The Swan. They raised over £510. Afterwards, they met with oher Chatty Café regulars for a good old natter.

Mirella was interviewed by Royal Borough Radio for the Community Matters show. During the interview she describes what she was hoping to achieve. It is well worth listening too. Congratulations Mirella!

4th May: May the Fourth be with you!

The Jedi and Sith came out in full force for May the 4th be with you. The sun was shining, Darth Lainey performed a fabulous couple of sets of live music and Admiral Ackbar's snack bar was a roaring success... Not to forget a very fortunate visit from the Mandalorian sniper! Thank you all for supporting and basking in our sun trap garden!

8th May: Quiz Night

Micky was back in the chair at this week's pub quiz, aided by Peter who stepped into the breach to solve an un-anticipated sound problem. With delicious irony the 'Stereo Not Working Swans' grabbed the £25 top prize.

Whilst Daniel from Four Candles chose the coveted Packet of Crisps raffle prize. Next quiz, the raffle prize will be £80.

14th May: Warhammer

What an incredible night! This was the busiest yet and had so many attendees that they were squeezing in tables! The fallout from Warp Gate Wars has clearly given the players the bug, and the organisers couldn't be more thrilled. The room was buzzing with excitement and camaraderie. It's amazing to see the Warhammer community growing and thriving. Thank you to everyone who came out and made it such a memorable evening. Let's keep the momentum going!

16th May: Bingo Night

Bingo proved to be very popular especially when you could get a Thai meal too. We had more than 40 inside and another 30 outside between the two having a fantastic time. Bingo is most certainly going through a renaissance at the moment and The Swan seems to be the place to be. Why not join us? Eyes down!

16th May: Swan Elders

GRC welcomed an old friend of The Green Room and The Swan, PCSO David Bullock in for this week's Swan Elder. David spoke about his tireless work in the community, and most importantly, give us a refresher on how to use the defib which is placed outside The Swan. David, a familiar face to many in the Windsor community, has been instrumental in getting so many public access defibs onto our streets, including our own!

17th May: Chatty Café

The Chatty Café took the opportunity of the sun to step out into The Courtyard for their weekly chatter and natter. It's a real mixture who came down to enjoy a bit of time friends old and new. Open to all.

18th May: The Cycle Hub

Another busy day at The Swan for the Windsor Cycle Hub's regular Saturday morning fun. They had THREE groups for their Level 3 Guided Ride to Windsor Great Park. Plus their Bike Kitchen lads were busy fixing bikes in The Courtyard. In addition, their new 8.30am Early Birds rode to Beaconsfield. Want to be part of this? Come to The Swan next week for our Level 4 ride!

Another packed house saw Quiz Master Martin back in the chair and Patrick's Posse back in the winners enclosure. Congratulations also to Colin who won himself a house spirit and mixer in the raffle. He didn't win the cash jackpot which rolls over to a magnificent £90 at the next quiz on Wed 12 June.

23rd May: Visit by the Illinois Institute

We were delighted to receive a visit from the Illinois Institute of Technology (architecture students) from Chicago. Micky and Richard gave a guided tour and update on our lovely community. They're helping to do up a pub near Oxford and wanted us as inspiration. Our turn next year?

24th May: Celebrating Rene

A day to remember Rene, our oldest and first regular.

26th May: Sound of Music

Following on from the success of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Mickey arranged a Sound of Music evening during the bank holiday. We thought the Covent in Hatch Lane had closed in 2000, but surprisingly three nuns turned up! Although, one of them is more than slightly dubious in character.

30th May: Swan Golf Tournament

28 golfers braved the elements this week to compete for the inaugural Swan Community Golf Day Trophy at Royal Ascot Golf Club. The winning team was Peter Clifford, Tim Johnson, Jon Adams & Richard Audsley, who had designed the impressive trophy, which is now on display in The Swan. The day raised £240 for The Friends of The Swan Refurbishment Fund. In addition, the raffle held on the day raised a further £240 for The Green Room School's summer expedition for its students.

31st May: Coffee Morning

This provided another opportunity to eat cake and feel good about it! The coffee morning was raising funds for the King George VI Day Centre (The Swan Community Charity for 2024). We managed to raise £265.66 for them through the sale of ckaes and coffee, and through donations too. Thanks to all who came to support this and also to the volunteers for all the organisation. Well done!

31st May: Karaoke

For the first time since re-opening in 2019, Micky organised a Karaoke evening in The Coach House. There were lots of photos and videos taken of the occasion as the locals loved the opportunity to 1batter one out' showing their singing prowess. We decided to not publish the videos to protect children and those of a nervous disposition.
