May 2023

Here is a round-up of the events at The Swan during May, 2023.

2nd May: Warhammer

We saw our first ever Warhammer event at The Swan on Tuesday 2nd. We had a lot of feedback that players were looking for somewhere since the shutdown of Games Workshop in the town. We had an excellent turnout and we expect more to come in the future - YES, this will be a regular event at The Swan going forward: every Tuesday from 7pm, pre-booking is required.

The Coronation Weekend

We had a full weekend of events covering the Coronation of HM King Charles III and Queen Camila. The pub was busy throughout the weekend as people really got into the spirit of the themed day. We have a dedicated page to the Coronation that has all the photos, we are presenting just a few here to whet your appetite.

9th May: Warhammer

Another wicked night of Warhammer at @theswanclewer last night! Fantastic to see some new faces and meet new people. The gaming tables looked great and the armies looked even better. Last night we saw these battles take place: Iron Warriors vs Blood Angels, Blood Angel vs Imperial Fists (The Banana Men), and Tyranids vs Tau. Looking forward to next week! Every Tuesday from 7pm in The Coach House.

10th May: Chatty Table

New to The Swan, this was Trudy preparing for the first of our Chatty Tables. This is an international idea to try and get people to come out and have a wee chat over a cuppa. No experience required. All are welcome, for however long you want to join in, we are trying to build this up on a Wednesday. This week it was 12-2pm, but we may move it to 1-3pm to be more suitable for people.

10th May: Quiz Night

It was another rip roaring Quiz Night which had a small leaning to the impending Eurovision competition in a few days. Quiz Master Martin was on fine form delivering a real mixture of rounds including Eurovision. The eventual winners were previous winners Hetties Heroes, Sheila Allan won a glass of wine in the Lucky Draw and there was a special "Null point" for team who got least across the 3 Eurovision rounds, The Smartinis.

15th May: Open Forum

The Coach House was packed again with members of The Bevy. The purpose was for the Directors to provide a quick update on finances and progress of actions, and to allow a short Q&A session. No photos but there are minutes that you can look at here.

20th May: Prep for Pubs in Bloom

Thanks to all who joined us last weekend to help gather, plant out and arrange our floral decorations ready for the Pubs in Bloom competition, as well as clearing the Courtyard of a rampant Virginia Creeper! Particular thanks go to Nick, Ismene and Bas for plant donations and to Gordon for some lovely red planters. If you can help share the load of watering and maintenance, please do get in touch with the team ! Judging will be unannounced and could be anytime from tomorrow – we are ready for them!

24th May: Quiz Night

It was another tight contest this week at our popular quiz, with the West Windsor Wine Swillers coming out on top by a mere half a point! Sue Rigby picked a glass of wine from the raffle draw so the cash jackpot rolls over again and will be £40 at our next quiz on Weds 14th June, 7.30 for 7.45pm.

25th May: Epic Thursday

GRC finished the half term with a very special Epic Thursday - their Big-Hearted BBQ Brunch. The courtyard was packed and we raised over £70 for Fight Bladder Cancer. There was face painting, hair braiding, a mega raffle and live music from Steve Carroll and Windsor Boys' School two-piece The Squirts. We were even visited by new Deputy Mayor Simon Bond and Consort David Armitage on their first public engagement. All the students mucked in and had a great time and the vibe was joyous!

Meanwhile, the big news in the ongoing betterment of The Swan this week is...the glass washer is fixed! Made possible by our own homegrown enterprise, Gibbs Motor Repairs, Elliot has a canny knack at diagnosing problems and finding solutions. After initial scepticism, the staff are now all delighted! GRC are off on half term break next week, so the next Epic will be Thurs June 8th.

26th May: Coffee Morning

Thanks to all that turned out for our charity coffee morning in aid of Swan Support. Also to the bakers who donated some delicious cakes to go with the coffee. We raised £198 which will be transferred to the charity in the coming days. A huge thanks to Wendy Hermon of Swan Support who took us through a short presentation about the work they do - it really did help our understanding.

28th May: Sunday Market

Our first Mini-Market of the season went down a treat last Sunday, helped along by the sun which put in a lasting appearance for the whole afternoon! The Courtyard was buzzing and our stall holders did a roaring trade!

30th May: Pubs In Bloom

The Pubs in Bloom team made the final touches to our wonderful floral decorations in time for the judging – we hope they appreciate it as much as we know you all do! This has been done over several days showing the commitment of the team. Now they are taking turns to water the plants to ensure they keep growing and make the place look its very best. Huge thanks to all involved.
