July 2024

Here is a round-up of the events at The Swan during July, 2024.

7th July: BBC Radio Berkshire

On Sunday 7th July, our General Manager, Micky Foden-Andrews, was interviewed on Radio Berkshire. During her regular Sunday Afternoon show, Erika North talked to Micky about being a finalist in the GBPA and also what is going on in the pub during July. He certainly has a face for radio! And has been invited back too.

8th July: Datchet Morris Dancers

We were privileged to be the last stop for the Datchet Morris tour of Windsor. They performed a number of traditional dances under the covering in The Courtyard. During their tour, they presented a cheque for £600 to their own chosen charity, Thames Hospice. This was fitting as they are supporting one of the troupe, their very own #WingmanJohn and his family.

10th July: Euros 2024 Semi-Final

The pub was packed both inside and out for the second semi-final of the Euro 2024 campaign. England were victorious over The Netherlands with a cracking last gasp goal from Ollie Watkins. It was a real nail biter which saw England achieve their first final in a foreign country. The final is on Sunday and bookings were unbelievable within a few minutes of the final whistle.

14th July: Soul Sunday

Soul Stew was set up in the covered area in The Courtyard just in case the weather turned. However, we were blessed with some good weather which matched the fantastic soul music. The BBQ was on and the beer excellent - a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon and get ready for the Final later in the day!

14th July: Euros 2024 Final

The pub was full both inside and out due to the music in the afternoon, the BBQ, and a little game of football that was on the tele. Shops had closed early, the PM had given blessing for an extension to opening hours, and it was over to Gareth and the boys to bring it home. The opportunity was there, the stage set, but unfortunately Spain were just a little better than England on the night winning 2-1. Disappointment for sure, but there is always the World Cup in two years.

17th July: BBC Breakfast

BBC Breakfast were doing an article on Community Pubs including reports and a studio discussions. They had footage of one pub and then went to a studio segment for the discussion. Steve Alton of the British Institute for Innkeepers was there and, via the internet, our very own Richard Allen representing The Swan (and successful community pubs). Despite it being before 8am, all were very spritely and had an interesting discussion.

18th July: Bingo Night

Another great Bingo night with Dawn, Sheila, Alice and Sally winning lines and Avril, Martin, and Sheila winning full houses. Bar team member Lee won £8 and Sid £17 in the Top of the Bill cash prize. Bingo is taking a break for August and returns on Thurs 19th September for the winter season - pencil in your diary now!

19th July: W&E Brewery Dray

The Windsor & Eton Brewery Dray passed The Swan today. It is a regular visitor to The Swan and always grabs the attention of young and old alike. We don't get notice when it will be appear so it is always a nice surprise.

19th July: Fifth Birthday Party

It was the fifth birthday of re-opening The Swan after it lay derelict for three years. Owned by the community, the W&E Brewery and The Green Room School and run as a Community Investment Company, we all thought this was a good time to celebrate. And luckily, the weather thought that way too! The committee for the Friends of The Swan had laid on entertainment, food and a cake for the celebrations ... and the local community came out in force!

The volunteers - Ian and Anne - were cooking on the famous BBQ creatng delicious hotdogs and hamburgers. THe smell was fantastic as was the food!.

There was of course cake, and music was provided by DJ Wildcat, a favourite with the locals.

20th July: Windsor Cycle Hub

Another bumper day for the Windsor Cycle Hub. Two rides: firstly their Early Birds headed North West to the Chilterns, and secondly, their Level 3 headed South East to the RAF Memorial. Thanks to all the WCH volunteers for making this possible. Moody skies, but no rain.

20th & 21st July: XMas in July

One of Micky's Mega Events - Christmas in July - is unique within Windsor and probably Berkshire. We are privileged to have Santa to pop in to the pub during his holidays to say hello and check out how the kids are getting along. We had music on both days and a Christmas BBQ with turkey wraps et al.

Windsor Ukuele Band

Our very own Windsor Ukulele took to the stage on Sunday afternoon. They have been practising their set on Tuesday evenings at The Swan and at home. As usual, they were fantastic and made the day.

26th July: Coffee Morning

The coffee morning in aid of the King George VI Day Centre was really busy and took a lot of money for the charity. We rase a total of £302 through the sale of coffee & cake. Many thanks to those who came along and especially the volunteers. We would also like to thank te KG6 team for the wonderful gift they brought.

27th July: The Wedding

Kate and Chris celebrated their big day with family and friends in the glorious sunshine. There was a large marquee in The Courtyard that kept the sun off, and the place was beautifully decorated. Guests arrived in a classic London Routemaster bus. Congratualtions to the new Mr & Mrs Draper-Davis.

28th July: Mama Mia

We had a special showing of this ¿classic? movie in The Courtyard. There was a lot of interaction with the film with singing and dancing to the classic ABBA tunes. Much of the singing followed the keys used by Pierce Brosnan ... random. Everyone had a cracking time.

31st July: Quiz Night

In true Olympic style a tie-break was needed to confirm the winner this week. Hetties Heroes, with special guest subs, just pipped Desperados to the £25 prize. All was not lost as Steve, a Desperados regular, held the winning raffle ticket scooping a packet of crisps! As he didn't win the cash jackpot this rolls over to £130 at the next quiz.
