August 2019

Here is a round-up of the events at The Swan during August, 2019.

10th Aug: Volunteers AM

A very windy Saturday curtailed activities and required some fixing of the roof. However that did not dampen the spirit of the volunteers who stuck in during the morning. There was still a lot to do and as usual the team approached it with gusto.

  • From pulling down another ceiling in the hall area,
  • to making a start to the cleaning of the kitchen ceiling,
  • actually painting the bar ceiling,
  • more localised stripping of the bar windows to wire stripping
  • And tidying out the stables too!

Planning is undeway for the next morning so we can keep the pace going and finish the bar area ASAP.

17th Aug: Volunteers AM

Focus for the day was painting ... the bar, more bar, and even more bar! The aim was to get the ceilings and walls/pillars finished to allow the bar floor to be laid in the following week. We succeeded - huge thanks.

As well as painting, the team took on other tasks:

  • Pulled down the ceiling in the stock room and hall.
  • The usual wire stripping.
  • Preparing the chimney breast for pointing.
  • Plastering.
  • And preparing fo that night's BBQ and music.

Thanks to all who came down.

20th Aug: The Swan Book Club

New for The Swan - a book club. This inaugral meeting was run by Theresa Rooney, one of the volunteers. She wanted to get together with likeminded people and share a love of books.

They picked their favourite book, described it, and what it meant to them. It was informal and relaxed. All really enjoyed it and there are hopes of running another meeting soon. Watch out for it on the events page.

August: August BBQs

During August we had five Saturday BBQs which were well attended. We also had one brunch on the August Bank Holiday Monday. We had a range of meat, vegetarian and vegan options. We also served onions, cheese, etc as well as a full range of condiments.

There are some notable volunteers who made this happen:

  • Chefs: Ian Birch and Tony Cross
  • Food organisers: Rachel Cross and Louise Birch
  • Merchandise table: Anne Tebbatt and Peter Clifford

We also had some music from The Soul Works Duo and some impromptu guitar and bassoon sessions.

We were very lucky with the weather - blue skies each time.
