Renovation Diary: February 2022
4th February, 2022
While inside and out work continues as the pace hots up as The Kitchen gets nearer to completion. Plastering, tiling and bricklaying just some of the many jobs undertaken this week.
Following on from last week, Ian tackled more tiling in The Kitchen itself. The plan is to have anything that is not stainless steel, actually tiled. This is good for hygiene and keeping the place clean, but also keeps future maintenance to a minimum.
Meanwhile the Warriors have also been working in the corridor that connect The Storeroom, The Kitchen and the staris to The School House to the main bar. You have probably seen the door next to the gents toilets. This is exactly what is behnd it. There has been a substantial amount of work to get to this point.
The last of the windows arrived and was quickly installed. The last bits of brickwork and pointing were completed to completely seal The Kitchen. This should also make The Kitchen a lot warmer as it is no longer has large gaps out to the environment.
There was sooooo much going on that it was difficult to record everything. Ian was in at the weekend to plaster The Coldstore so that it was ready for painting/tiling as appropriate. All the spare fire and dry board was shifted up into one of the old bedrooms, a time consuming and tiring task. Pipework was being cut by Tony for the sinks. And a big thank you to Chris Null (a GR6 parents and Epic Thursday regular) who kindly donated this food warmer and gantry from Kings College School in Wimbledon as a welcome addition to our kitchen equipment.
With help from WCH volunteer Keith Patton today, we cleared up much of Stable 5 and scraped & applied white masonry paint to half the walls. The WCH had ordered various tools and bike spare parts which can now be accessed more easily for the weekly bike kitchen.
And don't worry, The Stables are covered by our security system!

The week has been about tiling. And more tiling. And yes you guessed it, even more tiling. The Kitchen and The Cold Store need a lot of tiles and it has taken an army of volunteers to do it. Even the students from our school have got involved which gives them some unique experiences.
Will probably miss someone, apologies if so (and do let us know). Thanks must go to Ian, Trevor, Tony, Lexie, Richard A, Richard D amongst others. Even whilst they were working long hours, they kept a smile on their face.
It is hard to state the amount of tiling required, from just aboove the floor right up to the ceiling. And with windows, doors, sockets, etc to work round too, it has been very time consuming. These photos do not do it justice what they Warriors have achieved.
McFarlane Telfer came in to put in the plumbling for the sinks, etc by the windows. Whilst this appears a big step forward, it needs to be disconnected to allow the grouting on the tiles before being re-connected. That said, the installation did invaluable experience for the apprentices.
The Storeroom is now in a position it can be used properly. All the boarding, plastering and painting has been completed. The electrics are in and there is lighting, fire detection and emergency exit signs all working. The bar team have been bringing out the various boxes, etc that have been secreted all round the building and putting them in the newly erected shelving units.

Continuing thanks to our Weekday Warriors who have spent another busy week in The Kitchen. As you can see sinks are in place, tiling nearly complete with finishing the grouting the last step. It won't be long now!!!!
Sincere thanks to Bas who has added welcome colour to the front of the pub. He took away the hanging baskets that were full of dead flowers and restocked them.

Taking advantage of the half-term absence of GRS students, the Warriors have insulated and soundproofed the extractor which passes up from The Kitchen and through the School Room. Not wasting anytime after her return from Ghana, Lexie was soon busy applying a finishing coat of paint to the steel installed long before the tiling and grouting reached such an advanced stage of nearing completion.
