Renovation Diary: September 2019

6th September 2019

Probably the biggest news of this week is that the scaffolding has started to come down. Okay it is only a small bit, but it is a start. This was around the entrance to the school room. Also the iron railings were welded back on after making some small repairs.

And the sparkies have been hard at this week connecting up the cellar, the bar, the toilets and the school room. They have a little work to do behind the scenes to connect up the boiler and heating, but they are ready for the fire and security equipment to be connected up tomorrow. In a couple of weeks they will set-up the wifi.

The team have also been busy putting fire doors on the toilets, varnishing the school room floor, further stripping of the front windows, plaster boarding in the hall, and working to commission the gents toilet (very soon guys, honest).

Scott the plumber has been hard at it this week:

  • commissioning the gents toilets
  • connecting up the school's kitchenette
  • mounting the radiators in the school room
  • installing the glass machine in the bar, and
  • installing the ice machine in the cellar.

The equipment took slightly longer than planned, but there was a huge cheer when he appeared from the cellar with a handful of ice.

If you have been in the pub, there have been a number of paint trials going on. Some successful, some less so and have been changed.

Plans for the next couple of days include:

  • grouting the gents, sealing it, and adding the cistern,
  • painting in the bar and toilets,
  • cutting and attaching the skirting, and
  • adding the bar front.

We've heard it a few times in the last couple of weeks ... it's starting to look like a real pub. Give us a few more days and it will be even more so and with the new sign hanging outside the door (being installed this afternoon), hopefully it is somewhere we are all proud of.

Project Manager's Report

We have had a Productive week at The Swan.

The men's urinals are now up and running and we have started decoration to the men's loos.

We have sourced some really lovely Moroccan style mirrors for ladies room and it has given the room the wow factor . We still have decoration touch ups to do.

Next week we will be fitting the baby change units to both the men’s and ladies toilets.

The skirtings have been cut to size and are ready to fit.

We now have WiFi and a television in situ which is a real milestone.

The electrical works are almost complete and the external wall lanterns that have been lovingly restored by Baz and Diane will be fitted today.

We have been working on the main windows that we will start painting next week.

The school room opened its doors this week and looks fantastic and we have already had some interest from people looking to rent the space.

Pete our resident builder will be back next week and is going to complete the bar and start creating some fabulous window seating.

We have radiators ! All have been fitted now and will be connected and working next week.

The Swan opened its doors on Monday morning and nobody seemed to mind being amongst our regular volunteers armed with hammers, drills and paint brushes . We now serve delicious cakes and coffee from 9.30 am.

Have a super weekend.

We have had a very busy week. First a big thank you goes to all our volunteers for this week. Without these people the pub would not be at the stage it is. We've even had visitors from America helping us out!

A big milestone has been the installation of our new sign hanging proudly where it belongs. Many thanks to Peter our builder, Warren the Scaffolder, and the team who installed this last Saturday.

Inside the pub we now have in place the new corrugated front, to our bar. Also we now have the new keg serving bridge in place, which is very smart indeed. The external lights for the doorways been wired in and lit. Bas and Diana certainly did an excellent piece of restoration with them!

The school room is nearly completed. The guys from the Green Room are settling in nicely. As you can see, the desks and chairs can be set up in a variety of styles dependent upon the needs of the actual lesson - this is extremely important.

Site clearance is still going on and a massive push for this next coming week. We are trying to remove as much building materials and waste from the site as possible. This will improve the overall look and feel.
