May 2025
Here is a round-up of the events at The Swan during May, 2025.
2nd May: Chatty Café
The bank holiday didn't put our chatters off!

3rd May: Sponsored Walk and Run
he Bank Holiday weekend got off to a great start on Saturday with Mirella and Grant's Fundraising Walk/Run. A small but perfectly formed group ran 10K and another walked 5K, raising £150 for the Friends of The Swan Frontage Renovation Project. Thanks to all that turned out – your enthusiasm and generosity is very much appreciated!

4th May: VE Day 80 Celebrations
What a fabulous VE Day 80 celebration we had last Sunday! From opening at noon our special Lyons Corner House-style café was packed, with our 'Nippy' waitresses really having to nip about to keep up with preparing and serving our great 1940s menu! The SPAM sandwiches and Welsh Rarebit went down particularly well, together with the array of amazing homemade cakes and scones!

Our fine waitresses with a wee glimpse behind the scenes ... well, maybe we shouldn't show that last one!

The Coach House was decked out as a small cinema showing classic war movies such as Casablanca and the Dam Busters.

The Volunteer team were so busy that they really never stopped, nor got time to take many photos. Do you have some to share? Thanks in advance.
9th May: Chatty Café
Another great turnout at the Chatty Café - why not join us?

12th May: Micky is in the FINAL!
Well, FINALS here we come! Quarter finals felt amazing, semi- finals were mind blowing but now to make the FINAL six is an absolute honour. It is a true testament of what community looks like, running the swan is a privilege and thank you all for your never wavering support.

Next is the hard part... 16th June I have a full day of interviews with various panels to then find out on the 17th June!! @BII... thank you for seeing something in us. To get this feedback and validation in only six years of trading is wonderful. Cheers! Micky!
14th May: Quiz Night
This week's quiz was another corker from Quiz Lord Martin! With a works-do booking of colleagues from Centrica, his loosely linked round of questions about gas and other energy-related things was tricky for all, even them! Despite not leading at half way point, Patrick's Posse rallied round in the final three rounds to narrowly beat Clewer Clogs to win again, but Linda from the latter team at least won the Star Prize of a packet of crisps in the raffle.

The next quiz is on Weds 28th May, and with QLM unavailable, Micky will be at the helm. Book now if you think you're strong enough!!
15th May: Bingo Night
It was another small Bingo night this month, but the 10 players nevertheless had a riotous time, with small and big drink prizes won in abundance! And we had a new call for 29 - Cathy's Birthday - and enjoyed a rousing chorus of 'Happy Birthday' by Altered Images! The next Bingo Night will be on Thurs 19th June - the last before the summer break so don't miss it!

Pablo won a house

Mike won a line

Newcomer Mary won a line and a house too!

Izzy won a house

Katy won a line in the cash jackpot game

"Cathy won a line on her birthday!

"And Mike won the house in the cash jackpot!
15th May: Swan Elders
This morning the College had Steph's cousin Nate visit. He was delightful and engaging as he discussed his journey from Montreal to Gana, Berlin, the Canary Islands and finally deciding to make London his permanent home. He has developed a career in cyber security and had his fair amount of humorous stories to share in that regard. The College hope he can visit them again!

The college also had Patrick as their Swan Elder. Patrick told the students about his career in the military as a musician, his career in the police, also as the security manager at Wembley stadium and now as a director of his own conflict management company. We also learnt he is back playing his music with the army. It was an absolute pleasure to have him join.

Could you be a Swan Elder and share your lifestory with the students? Please do contact us!
16th May: Beerfest and Windsor Ukulele
Report to follow.

17th May: Beerfest and DJs
Report to follow.

18th May: Spring Courtyard Market
GRC hosted its very own Spring May Fayre this past Sunday. We were blessed with a lovely day at the Swan in Clewer and everyone enjoyed the sunshine. For the children, we had colouring and face painting done by Kim. In the Coach house we held a clothing swap and a sewing atelier with Jenny. Of all the activities, the afternoon tea was a smashing success. Many of the baked goods were made by GRC staff and students. The event was a collaborative effort as we had both students and staff working as a team. If you missed it this year, we do hope you can join us for next year's Fayre.

24th May: Windsor Cycle Hub
Today's colour was orange. Our Level 4 riders headed out from The Swan up to Hedsor - then back for a drink. The social side of riding is a big part of what we do. Next week it's 5th Saturday Skills.

25th May: Fantasy Football
The Premier League season is finally over and with its close, The Swan's 2024/25 Fantasy Football League has concluded.

It's massive congratulations to Colin Armfield and his team “Oliver Wants More”, who won the league with a comfortable 9-points margin and collected the trophy. A hard-fought Wooden spoon goes to Aidan Cronin, with “FC Spudulike”.

Enjoy the summer break Managers!
A huge thanks from all involved to Stuart Robinson who organised the Fantasy Football again.
27th May: The Swan Golf Day
The second Swan Community Golf Day took place earlier this week at Royal Ascot Golf Club. Twenty-seven golfers braved testing conditions to raise over £300 for Frontage Renovation Project. Once engraved, the trophies will be on display in The Swan. The team winners were Sue Choularton, Jane Stephen, Mark Pugh and John Munday.

The nearest the pin prize was won by Eamonn Gannon. Cindy Smith won the best individual par 3 performance. Her husband, Graeme, collected a bottle of champage from Peter Clifford on her behalf.

28th May: Creative Art
Tuesday evening art is well underway with host and artist, Dean Rossiter. This week the artists were in one of The Stables. Please email him at lcreativesuk@outlook.com if you want to get involved.

28th May: Quiz Night
Micky's Quiz Night this week was enjoyed by a packed house, with Dave's round of play-on-word questions particularly amusing! Hettie's Heroes won the quiz and Rachel won a glass of wine in the raffle.

29th May: Chess Club
The inaugral chess club meeting was held today and a few folk enjoyed a relaxing yet thought-provoking game of chess. This will now be a regular event on Thursdays at 3pm. The pub opens at 11am so you can get refreshments of your choosing to support the little grey cells.
