September 2021

Here is a round-up of the events from The Swan during September, 2021.

6th Sept: Board Games

The board games night is always popular with the students before they return to college/university. There were a number of tables trying out games old and new all under the guidance of Windsor's very own games designer, Simon Russell.

8th Sept: Quiz Night

The winners of the Quiz were the starngely named Enemies of the People. We are pretty sure that is not the case. We really should have a competition for the best / wierdest named team of the evening. One for the organisers.

Enemies of the People

Luckily we have a sound system that takes the quiz from the bar, to The Coach House and out into The Courtyard. It is really required due to the number of quizzers we had tonight. By the looks of Tony pinching his nose, it appears some of the questions in the quiz might have been quite hard.

9th Sept: Cribbage

Cribbage has a long history and has its roots in royalty. Our players are of varying standards but with the help of our 'experts' everyone is improving whilst enjoying themselves.

15th Sept: Creative Drawing

We held our first ever art class for adults in The School House, which is intended for complete beginners. The group got stuck in straight away, looking at shape, light and shade. Next week they are planning to put what they learned into practice by drawing fruit.

Classes are small, so there is plenty of opportunity for one to one tuition and work on a rolling three week schedule, so it is not too late to sign up for the next cycle. Given the concentration in the pictures, we are all looking forward to discovering the Caravaggio of Clewer!

Now on Wednesdays between 7-9pm, see theswanwindsor.co.uk/events.html for more information. Alternatively contact the organiser Dean directly at lcreativesuk@outlook.com or call 07557 226263.

Wednesday 15th September, 2021

Who would have thought it would almost be a full year before our follow-up cheese & wine. It was hotly anticipated by the community especially after our successful online extravaganza. Mike Unger - The Windsor CheeseMunger - provided some excellent post-lockdown / post-Brexit cheeses. Micky - our general manager - gave some really special offers on wines to help the digestion. As always, the place was busy. We are really looking forward to the next one in a month.

19th Sept: Talk Like a Pirate Day

We decided to celebrate International Talk Like A Pirate Day in style. The pub was decorated inside and outside by out motley crew in preparation for the Sunday event.

Cap'n Micky and Bosun Connor were joined by Seaman Tony in the galley. Other members of the crew helped at the bar, with the BBQ and in creating cutlasses for the younger pirates that were expected to visit. Event the cros's nest was manned for a while.

We had a steady stream of people throughout the day, with some even dressing up for the occasion. Our guest ale - Ghost Ship - went down a real treat and was sold out quickly.

22nd Sept: Quiz Night

This week's winners were The Sensual Smutty Swans who were sitting out in The Courtyard. We are unclear what was the inspiration for their name, disappointingly we will probably never find out.

Even though the nights are starting to draw in, there was a fai few out in The Courtyard for the Quiz. The pub as noral was full showing you really do need to book a table.

24th Sept: Macmillan Coffee Morning

This year we managed to have our Macmillan Coffee morning on the official day. We were really chuffed with the bakery provided and with the attendance. We managed to raise just over £300 which we will be sending to Macmillan Cancer Support. Thank you to everyone involved for their contribution whatever it may have been.

We had a number of coffee morning regulars and also some new faces. It was a nice day so people took the opportunity to sit in the sun in The Courtyard.

25th Sept: Bike Security

There was a fantastic turn out at The Swan for the Windsor Cycle Hub and Thames Valley Police. A lot of people brought their bikes down to be security marked. There was also advice about how to make sure you secure your bike properly and also on where to store them.

Our local warden was there too

Some took advantage of the Bike Kitchen that was running in parallel to get some necessary tweeks done to their setup. And there was a WCH stall selling bike security bits & bobs and other cycling necessities.

Bike stands were essential - lucky it was a dry day

And the main prize from the WCH summer auction was picked up by the winner.

If you do not have your bike security sorted out already - marking, chains, etc - then please do come down to the WCH Saturday Bike Kitchens and discuss it with the team. They are available every Saturday from 11 until 12 performing bike maintenance and offering advice. They also have a small stock of important bike spares.

26th Sept: Courtyard Market

Another mini-market and BBQ that was well attended. We had the usual array of stalls offering a range of fresh produce, craftwork, books and Swan memorabilia for sale. The ever popular Cheesemunger had a fine range of cheeses and took prime place at the entrance to The Coach House. And our BBQ manned by volunteers was serving an excellent brunch too!
